Yesterday morning I woke up with an OVERWHELMING urge to bake a huge great pretty pink polka dot cake, as one does. However, just before going to be the night before, I was reading HollyCakes and saw THE most AMAZING pie, which no doubt had something to do with it :D Now, the original plan - formulated as I was baking - was write about it here and post lots of pictures that would make you say things like oooh and aaaaahh, and sooo purrrty, but let’s just say that some plans don’t turn out like they’re intended. I tried to post about it last night, but my sides ached so much from the amusement of it all that I ended up having to lie down and call it a night as I’d laughed myself into a bad case of indigestion. Given that I’m just about to turn in for the night here and am hoping for a comfortable sleep, it’s probably best saved for tomorrow…..if I can bring myself to write about it, that is. So instead, I’ll write about the other things that we got up to yesterday.

The day began very early actually, and I was up, fully dressed and downstairs by 9am ready to get on with things (9am is Very Early for me on a Sunday). In addition to the cake, I was also wanting to get on with sewing my new patchwork as Mutti had banned me from going anywhere near the sewing machine the night before. “I know what you’re like, I’ll get up at 4.30am to spend a penny, and you’ll still be downstairs with the lights on, whirring away on that machine” were her exact words if I recall. But she’s right actually, once I start something it’s incredibly hard to wrench me away as I’m always fully focussed on giving whatever it is 1000% of my effort and concentration. So I set the alarm instead, and awoke especially. I progressed fairly well and by 11.30am had about a quarter of the patches sewn, but then Jeeyet And Her Japanese Boyfriend came round for a cup of tea, so I got distracted and put it away….heaven forbid should I lapse in concentration and sew the patches together in the wrong order! Oooh even thinking of such anxieties send shivers down my spine

Anyway, yesterday also happened to be National Apple Day, so when Malph announced that she was thinking about taking pictures of her new apron to put on her blog that afternoon, we thought it would be fun to join in with the fruity festive theme of the day and headed over to the local orchard. She’s planning to launch her E-shop on November 1st and by then wants to have an online gallery of all the things she’s made. Hiring a professional person to take all the pictures would be horrendously expensive though, so we’re going to have a go at doing it ourselves. So far we’ve had a lot of fun doing it (she stands there, I take the pictures) and it’s a good way of learning about the settings on my camera. Anyway, here’s how we spent our afternoon:

The orchard is one of the most beautiful places around here, especially at this time of year when there’s a slight misty haze in the air and the leaves and grasses are beginning to turn the same russet hues of the apples.

The orchard

To the right in the above picture, you can just about see the horses that live in the field next door

And there’s a little stable down there too

Looking out towards the stables that are next to the orchard

But back to the fruit orchard…..full of (almost) ripe, juicy pears…

Ripe juicy pears in the orchard

and of course the reason why we were there, the APPLES!

Plump juicy apples, almost ripe for the picking

There were so many apples that the trees looked like they were overflowing! These ones will be ready to pick in and around the next couple of weeks or so, and they’ll last until christmas. Ooh, just think of all the yummy pies that they would make :)

So all in all, it made a perfect backdrop for my sister to photograph her aprons

My sister taking a picture of her latest home made apron

I should of course point you in the direction of her blog to see them properly, but here’s a sneak peek at what she was taking pictures of (I snuck in behind her and took this over her shoulder, shhh, don’t tell!). She made it entirely with her own fair hand, it’s so pretty. The lace was originally white, but she didn’t like the contrast after she’d sewn it on so dunked the whole thing in a vat of beige dye.

And then of course once she’d finished all of the pictures she wanted to take, I got to play photo session with her and make her do silly things like running up and down the lines of trees waving her arms around like a fairy, hee hee! She ran up and down, and up and down and was exhausted after all of it. She made this dress too.

And of course we weren’t the only people enjoying the apples - if you took a peek last night at Paige’s Latest Outfit, you would have noticed already that Paige came out with us too. She loved it!

Paige took a long time to decide which apples to pick, they all looked so juicy!

She even picked a couple too!

If you want to see the rest of the photos from our afternoon in the orchard, you can see them on my flickrstream.

Bitterly disappointed not to see the Polka Dot Pie; but did pop over to Hollycakes and have concluded it’s best if I continue to stalk you rather than her because reading her blog will make me fat. (Ditto Pioneer Woman Cooks ). Anyway, lovely apple photos - if I made my sister flutter like a fairy she’d zap me with her wand. Paige is looking very smart - is it just me or is there something of Gwyneth Paltrow about her?
Look forward to apple pie posts when the fruit is ready for picking!

I just loved looking at this series of pictures.
Such a fun day with your sis!
She is lovely and so is her apron.

You have a gorgeous family!

Any other sisters and brothers?

Oooh, now that you mention it she does look a bit Gwynneth-esque doesn’ she? Maybe that could be her middle name?

Miz Booshay, no, it’s just us three daughters. Poor Young Father who has had a house full of women for the most of his life. He and Barnaby are the only two male members of the household.

Thank you ((so)) much for sharing! I am officially addicted to your site and Malphi’s site. Am I missing another I should be viewing, too?! You are blessed.

That looks like so much fun! We haven’t been apple picking in such a long time. I love the second picture, the one with the horses. Your sis’ apron is lovely, too. And now to click all those links…

You take such gorgeous pictures, but you have gorgeous views too. Beautiful apples and green…that one horsey had a blanket on…and I agree that Paige looks like Gwyneth Paltrow. Both are beautiful. Nin, did you happen to see the photo of Addy’s house on my Fun Monday post. Do you know who that is?

that apple orchard is PERFECT for the apron pics! one simply CANNOT go baking in her kitchen without FIRST going to pick fresh apples from the orchard.
the red of the apples is so vibrant! just BEAUTIFUL, Nin!

Oooh Junebug, you got to visit! How exciting! I must confess that I looked it up on the internet a couple of months ago when Ree first posted about it to find out where it was. How exciting that you got tot go!

Haha, yes, absolutley kalurah, like in the same way that one must sell one’s pies in the farmers’ market the next day, hee hee ;)

Dear Nin,

Could you tell me what camera you use to take these exquisite pictures? You have such an eye for lovely arrangements!

Hi Heather, it’s a Nikon D80. I took those with a combination of a 50mm and 18-135mm lenses with multicoated UV filters using a manually adjusted shutter speed and white balance, except for the Paige photo were I used aperture priority . And I shoot at high saturation to pop the colours. There’s more info about my camera in the “About Nin” page. :)

[...] Ho well, I don’t think I’ll be making that mistake again. And at least baking it got my overwhelming pink cake urge out of my system. Well, at least for a couple of weeks (the colder weather makes me feel [...]
